Developing Mathematics Understanding in English Language Learners

This course integrates research-based best practices in mathematics instruction and SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol), a national model used to support high-quality instruction in academic content areas for ELL students. In addition to learning effective mathematics instructional practices and sheltered instruction strategies, this professional development experience helps increase participants' capacity to be reflective and collaborative practitioners.

This service can be customized for: Teachers, paraprofessionals, and principals who deliver mathematics content to ELL and migrant education students. Courses are tailored for specific grade clusters—K-2, 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12.

What Participants Will Learn

  • Effective mathematics instructional practices identified by current research
  • Effective sheltered instruction strategies
  • How to work collaboratively with other teachers to improve teaching and learning for ELL students in mathematics

Format

This professional development experience may consist of a combination of the following components, depending on your school or district's needs:

  • A series of workshops examining research-based best practices for mathematics and sheltered instruction
  • Video Study Group meetings, facilitated on-site by a NWREL staff member, in which teachers examine and discuss videotapes of their own classroom instruction
  • Asynchronous online discussions and assignments (Participants will be given access to a course Web site providing assignments, discussion forums on topics related to the readings, and Web-based resources.)
