Lesson plan

Reflection (5-7 Minutes)

"A teacher is like the downstairs maid. My God, there isn't a single teacher on the New York City Board of Education, it's preposterous. Can you imagine a Board of Surgery that didn't include a Surgeon."

-- Frank McCourt

Write a reflection on your feeling of this quote. What do you think McCourt is trying to say? boes San Francisco's Unified School District fit the idea of this quote, why or why not?

Lecture of the Four articles (15-20 Minutes)

Lecture will cover the basic idea of the readings, notes are optional, but are a good idea as ideas can be expressed in the homework assignment. There will be no overhead, as students are required to already have knowledge of how to take oral notes.

Socratic Seminar/biscussion (25 Minutes)

The purpose of this section is to test the knowledge of the students, as well as get feedback to their [students'] basic understanding of the reading. Maximum participation is required, as this section of the lesson will be graded (the more the students participate the better the grade).

"The nature of public education today is roughly this: There are few excellent schools and too many horrendous ones, but most are somewhere in between."

-- Life Education

"Typically, people in poor communities and in inner cities spend [a higher percentage] of their wealth on education and spend more of their local tax money on public education than any other community in the nation"

-- Michael Casserly, Council of Great Schools

The following will be the quotes used in this discussion ... the item below is the point system as to how students will accumulate points:

lpt. - Explanation of quote (i.e. what do they think the quote(s) mean)

2pts. - Explanation of quote plus relation to your life

3pts. - Explanation of quote plus comparison between Balboa and MA

4pts. - Explanation of quote plus connection to society and law today

5pts. - Explanation of quote plus relation to other readings

Homework (5 Minutes)

The homework is to evaluate what the students got from the lesson. The assignments total worth is 100 points, failure to do the homework will result in the student's failure for this lesson.

Question to Answer: Do the articles relate to our situation at Balboa? at AM? Explain, defend your claim with strong warrants. Write a 2-page minimum Analysis of the four articles. Compare the articles to our situation at Balboa.

Requirements: At least two pages typed, double spaced 12-point font (if no computer is available two pages-two pieces of paper back and front-NEATLY hand written work will be accepted) Sloppy handwriting will hurt your grade.

IF I can't read it, you get docked points!

Essays must have citations from the four articles and for EXTRA CREDIT students may also cite pass readings. When you don't cite you plagiarize, and I know all your writing styles so please cite your work.Jf I see that you claim work that is not yours ATUOMATIC FAILURE...

Students must turn in the essay in on WEDNESDAY- March 29. 2000

NO EXCEPTIONS; IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO DO IT THEN EXPECT AN F!

Extra Points, if you care to rack up on points:

Use the following terms on your paper: dehumanization, humanization, bipolar, spectrum, society, school, funding, inferiority, superiority and resources.

Include citations from other reudings we have done in Pre-Law (MAJOR PT5)

Impress me with other research!

If you don't pull through...

If you do not do this assignment, I cannot stress it more that you willfail this lesson, the assignment is the largest component of your grade, if you decide to mess around, you grade will be severely hurt, I ADVISE THAT YOU DO NOT PLAKEIII It is your grade and your choice, do the advisable thing...

GOOD LUCK AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION, HAVE A NICE DAY!
