Around the region, AmeriCorps Members celebrated National Volunteer Week (April 21-27) with hard work and extra service, demonstrating the awesome effects of national service and volunteerism. Here is just a smattering of activities:
Idaho AmeriCorps and VISTA Members fanned out across the state and leveraged volunteers to accomplish great things. In Boise, they built a community garden. At Heyburn State Park, AmeriCorps Members (ACM) repaired flood damage and cleaned up the banks of the St. Joe River. Elementary students in Pocatello worked with VISTA volunteers to pot plants for delivery to local nursing homes. In Lewiston, ISPIE Members planted trees, worked on a community garden, and beautified the park. Twin Falls Members prepared the ground and installed an irrigation system for a garden in a low-income housing area. Way to go, Idaho!
Montana AmeriCorps programs involved many partners in projects across the state. Focusing on human needs and environmental beautification, ACMs carried out projects in Missoula, Hamilton, Libby, Dillon, Lewistown, Great Falls, Billings, Helena, and Fort Belknap. Highlights include staffing the Annual Walk for Multiple Sclerosis in Missoula and Billings, a citywide "Clean Start" in Missoula, a citywide oil collection project in Lewistown, and a "Bike Rodeo" encouraging safe bicycling in Libby. Parks and public areas were cleaned up and restored.
Oregon's AmeriCorps Members coordinated a food drive and built a home in Bend. In Cascade Locks, ACMs worked with students to create environmental trails. In Gresham, three AmeriCorps programs joined a hundred volunteers to plant native species in riparian zones. In Springfield, Parents as Partners Members sponsored a technology fair and presented a workshop on classroom guidance techniques. Other programs volunteered with Oregon Food Bank, weatherized homes, and cleaned up highways and homeless shelter sites.
Washington's AmeriCorps programs and thousands of volunteers engaged in dozens of events for National Volunteer Week. In Yakima, two programs joined to conduct a street fair. Spokane Members constructed a playground. Olympia ACMs replaced vegetation around low-income housing. In Seattle, an AmeriCorps barbecue closed the week. Restoration projects, mural painting, book drives, and tree plant-ings are just a few of the many other service projects that en-livened communities throughout Washington.
