"Yellowstone summer project
galvanizes new partnerships"
by Carl Menconi, Center for National Service in the Environment

May 1996

Planned projects include:
  • Eradication and revegetation of shortcut trails on the north rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, improvement of primary trails, installation and repair of handrails at canyon overlooks
  • Completion of an 800' causeway near the Boiling River hot springs (begun in 1992 but abandoned for lack of labor and funding) that will keep hikers from trampling fragile meadow areas
  • On the Mystic Falls Trail near Old Faithful, reconstruction of an observation deck, chiseling a trail across slick rock, and building water and erosion control structures along one of the heaviest-used day hikes in Yellowstone
  • Removal and rebuilding of unsafe log bridges on the Spring Creek trail in the Old Faithful area
The 1996 Yellowstone Trails Project will also afford Corps Members an array of educational and recreational opportunities in the form of presentations from park experts on the history and current issues of Yellowstone, as well as organized hikes and tours of the park's many extraordinary natural features.

The National Park Service will provide technical supervision, tools, meals, and housing at "Blister Rust Camp," located near Canyon Village. The Center for National Service in the Environment, a national provider for AmeriCorps, will pay for a cook and a program coordinator. Participating crews will cover their own costs of supervision, travel, and other direct expenses.
