"National Service and Education...Step into the Limelight"

February 1996

A school principal in a rural northwest school holds AmeriCorps Members directly responsible for 30 point increases in math scores among the district's most discouraged learners. An elementary teacher with a Learn and Serve project shows how her students have learned more science than ever through building a community garden. In a high crime urban area, an after-hours project helps parents create better learning environments for their children.

Examples like these point to the many increases in educational outcomes leveraged by partnerships between national service and education. The Department of Education, Northwest State Commissions for National and Community Service, and Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory have joined to provide a venue for celebrating these successes.

Northwest AmeriCorps Members and Learn and Serve recipients are invited to present their accomplishments before a distinguished panel of policymakers at the National Service and Education: Partnerships for Success symposium May 7. Location will be the Shoreline Conference Center in Seattle. Presentations must be a team effort involving national service and education partners, and will include papers read before the panel. Papers chosen will detail concrete accomplishments and impacts on learners that have resulted from service learning or AmeriCorps projects in Montana, Oregon, Washington, or Idaho.

Teams selected to present at the symposium will receive an award as well as travel expenses paid. In addition, papers will be printed and bound for dissemination, and continuing education credit options offered.

February 14, all Northwest AmeriCorps programs and Learn and Serve grant recipients were mailed a Call for Papers for the symposium with deadlines and submission criteria. If you are interested in participating, and did not receive this mailing, give NWREL a call immediately!

Our hope is to offer the larger audience your innovations in education deserve. Please join us by soliciting the involvement of AmeriCorps Members and Learn and Serve educators you know who are doing great things in education!
