" Effective Career Transitions"

Fall 1998

Have you talked with AmeriCorps members about what they will do after their term of service? Changhua Wang of NWREL recently completed a survey of AmeriCorps members in the Northwest that suggests ACMs want to enter careers that entail community or human service. Members need assistance, though, to find a position or education program that will satisfy their personal and economic needs after their term of service.

Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory has designed a training called "Where do you want to go?" that helps ACMs identify how their skills and experiences can match with future education, career, or volunteer opportunities. "Where do you want to go?" walks Members through skills assessments, identification of work styles, and helps them articulate skills on resumes, portfolios, cover letters, and job interviews. The booklet helps members identify next steps so that their transition from AmeriCorps is smooth. You can use tools in the packet to help members identify "growing points" that can be incorporated into member learning plans and evaluations.

The training is outlined in three parts that AmeriCorps staff can adapt and deliver at their own program sites. The trainings take a proactive approach to preparing members for that next step. An effective portfolio, for example, needs to be built throughout the term of service, so members are trained on the use of portfolios early in their term. The three workshops and support activities have been developed for training during member orientation, mid-term, and end of term training. AmeriCorps Network Northwest provides multi-site train-the-trainer workshops and telephone/e-mail support to program staff wanting to infuse this training into their program. Watch the AmeriCorps Network Northwest website at www.nwrel/ecc/americorps for a copy of the training booklet and training design that you can print off and use. Call Richard E. Melo at 800-547-6339 ext. 610 for more information about this transition training.
