GROWTH, CHANGE, AND NEW WAYS OF RESPONDING
Both the scope and volume of Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) activities have increased significantly during the past three years, and that growth accelerated in 1998. To note only a few of the indicators:
Three new centers were established to provide training and technical assistance in the areas of safe schools, mentoring, and volunteer services Comprehensive school reform assistance activities began Charter schools development and service activities expanded The Parent Information and Training Center became operational Nationally recognized resources and training in the area of writing assessment and instruction became the model for similar work in mathematics, reading, and science assessment NWREL's specialty area in school change processes provided leadership to bring together agencies, projects, and experts in this field from across the nation Regional activities were initiated in response to new and emerging priorities in areas of school safety, middle schools, reading, welfare reform, and paraprofessionals Requests for NWREL products and publications doubled since the prior year NWREL resources reached a record $15.6 million in 1998 The total staff increased to 194
The development of NWREL's Web site on the Internet has been another impressive development during the past three years. We now maintain some 6,000 data files on the Web, which had some 1.7 million accesses in 1998. It has become the dominant method for educational practitioners, policymakers, and the public to gain information from our Laboratory. That will continue to increase as we use the Web and other Internet applications to deliver training, technical assistance, and resource materials, in addition to information.
It is impossible to describe all of NWREL's important activities and accomplishments in detail in this Annual Report to Members. Further, a complete report today would be incomplete tomorrow. Therefore, we are keying the information in this year's report, for the first time, to addresses on the NWREL Web site, where you can find a wealth of additional information and resources. For example, the description of NWREL's Technology Center on page 33 mentions a NWREL product, Closing the Equity Gap in Technology Access and Use: A Practical Guide for K-12 Educators. The accompanying icon identifies the location on our Web site where the complete document can be found and printed out: www.netc.org/equity/. Another example: We mention in the "Activities and Accomplishments" section of the Annual Report that our Work Now and in the Future conference, drawing some 2,500 people, is the year's largest event. Extensive information including conference highlights, a complete agenda, accommodations, exhibitors, and online registration are found on the Web site at www.nwrel.org/edwork/wnf15/.
And, yes, this 1998 Annual Report can be found at
www.nwrel.org/comm/1998ar/.
The world continues to change as we approach the 21st century. Educational reform must accelerate to be effective and relevant in the new global context. NWREL is responding in more and different ways to help schools and communities improve the results of education.
