The Head Start/Public School Early Childhood Transition Demonstration Project was a longitudinal study designed to demonstrate an innovative model for providing a comprehensive and integrated program of education and support services to children and their families. This study took place in Portland, Oregon, at four public schools beginning in Head Start and continuing through grade 3. The project was designed to:

build on and enhance existing programs and service linkages to promote children's continuous educational and social development from pre-kindergarten through third grade; ![]()
assist parents in supporting their children's healthy development and learning at home; and ![]()
expand opportunities for parent involvement as full and equal partners in the educational process. This publication takes a qualitative look at the impact the Project had on the participating children, families and schools.
