Family Service Workers

Facilitators of the Integration of Education and Human Services

Helen Nissani and Wendy Garcia
December 1992

To help children and their families surmount impediments to learning, many Northwest schools are joining hands with social service agencies to offer coordinated assistance. A byproduct of the integration of education and human services is the emergence of a new role--the family service worker. A new paper describes the role, responsibilities, duties, and methodology of this new type of professional charged with linking the educational and human service systems to maximize services for families. It also addresses why the school has become an important link in these efforts, ways in which the role differs from traditional social work, and the emphasis on cultural awareness in the role of the family service worker. The authors surveyed 21 programs in Oregon, Washington, and Montana. The programs spanned a wide range of agencies, from preschools to community colleges, teen parent programs to job training agencies, education service districts to community partnerships.
