Mathematics Summer Institute 2006

For Teachers of Kindergarten - Grade 2

July 31 - August 4

During the Mathematics Summer Institute, teachers will engage in a variety of activities to deepen their understanding of number sense and algebraic reasoning. The activities include:

• Engaging in mathematics
• Analyzing video clips and examples of student work
• Reading and discussing articles
• Investigating research from Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI)

The Institute will explore the following:

• What is number sense and algebraic reasoning?
• How do children develop number sense and algebraic reasoning?
• What instructional strategies do teachers use to foster and support children's number sense and algebraic reasoning?

Participants will receive a copy of Children's Mathematics, Cognitively Guided Instruction (Carpenter, Fennema, Empson, Franke & Levi) and an institute binder.

The institute will be held at the Multnomah ESD, 11611 NE Ainsworth Circle, Portland, OR from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday, July 31 - Friday, August 4, 2006.

College credit available for an additional cost of $250 from Oregon State University.

Registration Procedures

• Teams of teachers, administrators and paraprofessionals are encouraged to attend.
• Registration must be completed online.
• Space is limited to 40 participants.
• Total cost for the five days is $550, which includes 30 hours of professional development, the CGI book, and institute binder.

Should you need to cancel your registration, a refund is available if written notification is received by July 15, 2006. A $50 processing fee will apply to all refunds. Requests made after July 15, 2006 will not be refunded.
