The Center for Classroom Teaching & Learning is grounded in the belief that classroom teachers are the most critical element in a school's efforts to ensure that all students achieve the high academic standards needed to be productive citizens in the 21st century.
Mission
The Center provides research-based resources and services to enable educators to implement high-quality curriculum, instruction, and assessments that foster learning, performance, and achievement for all students.
Work Components
- The Classroom-focused Research and Evaluation Program, Dr. Edith Gummer, Program Director conducts work related to Task 1.2 of the REL contract and an NSF IERI grant. In addition, the Classroom-focused Research and Evaluation Program conducts evaluations through fee-for-service contracts. These focus on a wide range of programs from kindergarten through higher education and are structured to determine the impact of initiatives in mathematics, science, reading and technology.
- The Equity Program, Joyce Harris, Program Director, includes the Region X Equity Assistance Center (EAC), one of 10 regional equity assistance centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education. At the request of school boards and other responsible governmental agencies, the EAC provides training and technical assistance on issues related to equity in education to AK, HI, ID, OR, WA, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the Republic of Palau. The Equity Program also provides technical assistance to support the learning of diverse students through fee-for-service contracts.
- The High Quality Core Academics Program, Kit Peixotto, Senior Program Director and Dr. Seymour Hanfling, Assistant Program Director, includes the Northwest Regional Comprehensive Center (NWRCC), one of 16 federally funded regional centers, that provides support to state departments of education (SEAs) in ID, MT, OR, WA, and WY in the implementation of NCLB legislation. In addition this program's work involves a variety of fee-for-service contracts.
- The Mathematics Education Unit, Dr. Linda Griffin, Unit Director, provides fee-for-service professional development and technical assistance to schools, districts, educational service districts, and state departments of education. The Mathematics Unit has expertise in a wide range of educational services including training in the NWREL Mathematics Problem-Solving Model, offering institutes to improve mathematics instruction among elementary teachers, conducting workshops on mathematics-focused lesson study, providing diagnostic and end-of-course mathematics assessment, and delivering professional development courses focused on mathematics instruction for English language learners
